Social Studies: Industrial Growth and Expansion in the 1800's

In the next few weeks we will be studying industrial growth and expansion during the 1800's. According to the New York State Standards, students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of the United States and New York. We will be focusing on the development of American culture, its diversity, and the way that people are unified by many values, traditions, and practices. For more information on this time period, check out Kidinfo.com.

In this unit, students will research their families' ethnic background and share their customs and traditions with the class. At the end of this unit, we will celebrate with an ethnic festival featuring foods, music, and crafts from many different cultures. Parents and students are encouraged to be a part of the festivities. Feel free to bring in ethnic foods, music, and crafts. This will be a day full of fun to celebrate our familiy hertiage! Look for more information to follow! I look forward to seeing you at our festival!

Math Topic: Fractions

Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed your holiday break and your ready to come back to school!

This coming week we will be working on fractions. Fractions can often be very tricky for students, but according to the New York State Standards, you must be able to recognize and generate equivalent fractions (halves, fourths, thirds, fifths, sixths, and tenths) using manipulative's, visual models, and illustrations. To start things off, I would like you to check out Coolmath.com. Coolmath.com has 17 different fraction topics and games that will allow you to practice your fractions. The games are a lot of fun, and they will explain anything you have trouble with. I hope you enjoy the games as much as I do!

Health and Nutrition Week

As you may already know, we are starting our health and nutrition unit next week. This is one of my favorite units because we learn a lot of important things we can do for our body to stay healthy! In this unit we will learn about healthy eating habits, exercise, and why it is so important we take care of our bodies.

I have found some great websites that students can use to learn more about nutrition. The first website is called Nourish Interactive. Nourish Interactive is a great interactive website that has lots of fun games and nutritional tips that are beneficial to both students and their parents.

The second website is called Nutrition Explorations . Nutrition Explorations provides students with information on the four food groups, healthy eating tips, fun recipes, and fun games. I can guarantee this is a fun site for everyone!

The last website is called PrimaryGames.com. This website has fun games and activities students can do to learn more on nutrition. My personal favorite is The Amazing Food Detective. This game has 8 different cases to solve on student nutrition. Do you know what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle? Go ahead detectives, try to solve all 8 mysteries!
I hope you find these sites as a fun way to learn about living a healthy lifestyle! Enjoy!
